Children leave at dawn follows my documentary Cherry blue, which focused on young people enlisted in the army. The film uses fiction to depict a moment of separation between a mother and her son. This was my first experience working with professional actors.
The story takes place on the day of a fourragère ceremony, an honorary military distinction, during which the young soldier is formally recognized. The army scenes were shot in a documentary mode, with the actors immersed in real situations.
It was also my first film produced within an established professional framework. There were too many people on set, and each shot carried a certain heaviness that made it difficult to stay connected to reality. This experience profoundly shaped my subsequent work: smaller crews, permeability between the set and the surrounding spaces, as well as production decisions shared with the entire team.
